Green Cleaning Products - What is the problem with phosphates?

Phosphate reduction was one of the first major "causes" of the movement of green cleaning. Should we be concerned about phosphates yet?
Phosphates are natural compounds essential to life on our planet. The fact that living organisms use of phosphates has been a key argument in detergents told that phosphates are not dangerous and should not be removed.
